After building an eclectic and sizeable record collection since the early 50s, I started a mobile deejay business in the mid 80s. After a successful 5 years I folded the business due mainly to a few health issues and the emergence of street dancing and the accompanying “music”.
Line dancing was big in 1998 so with the intention of limiting my playlist to only country and oldies I started deejaying line dances at Meadowbrook every Wednesday night.

The dance later moved to the Indiana American Legion where is continues to the present.
In 2003 I landed my first radio job at WIUP FM during IUP’s summer break. I had a 2 hour show that included oldies, classic rock, country, folk, and big band jazz. I requested and received a permanent Sunday evening time slot from 6 to 8 PM on WIUP to host a doowop show starting with the fall semester.
In 2005 I was hired as a board operator for Renda Broadcasting and worked high school, college, and professional sports for WDAD, WCCS, WLCY, and WQMU.
April 1st, 2007 was the first broadcast of Jim’s Doowop Show on WDAD (it was not lost on me that the operations manager selected April Fool’s Day for my first show – no one will ever convince me that it was a coincidence). It’s been running ever since.
I have been fortunate throughout my brief radio career that the managers in charge have trusted my judgment concerning the selection and sequencing of music (99 percent of which has been from my personal collection). Many callers have expressed appreciation for the ability to listen to their favorite songs again and also enjoy some music they’ve never heard before. Most of us who remember the songs on the Doowop Show are a little wider and and little shorter than we were back then - but the stress-free memories of those times are as clear and sharp as ever.
My wife (Connie) and I have been married since 1971. Our two offspring (Jennifer and James) are married and live with their spouses in Upper St. Clair and Amissville, VA. They have been responsible for 4 grandchildren ( in order of appearance – Andrew, Abby, Alex, and Courtney). I retired in 2005 after 34 years of teaching in the Hempfield School District and the Indiana Area School District.
I’d like to acknowledge and thank the people responsible for the voices heard throughout my show – Danielle, Megan, Denise, Sue, Kayla, Connie, Carmen, Jessica, and Jim D. They are all very talented people and add extra spark to the program. I also thank you, the listeners, for the many positive comments and the excellent requests I’ve received over the past few years.
