Contributions Included Time As State Representative and County Commissioner

One of Indiana County’s leading citizens has been killed in a car crash.  Bill Shane died in an accident yesterday afternoon on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.  State police in Everett say Shane’s car hit an embankment alongside the highway near Breezewood.

In his long career, Shane served as a state representative from 1971 to 1976 and as an Indiana County commissioner and Indiana Borough councilman.  He was also a member of the state Public Utility Commission and was scheduled to participate in the PUC’s 75th Anniversary celebration later this year.  Ron Fairman, the chairman of Indiana County's Democratic Party, says Shane was not only an advocate for democratic causes but also for all Indiana County residents.

In his retirement years, Shane has served as a volunteer with countless organizations.  Most recently, he has been heavily involved in the Chevy Chase Community Center in a grassroots volunteer effort to deliver bread and feed the hungry.  Center director Yvonne Redd says Shane's contributions to the center can't be replaced.  That is a sentiment echoed by center board member Carson Greene.

"Indiana County will miss Bill Shane," Greene says.

Deeply religious, Shane in recent years took to signing his correspondence with the word “shalom”, meaning “peace”.  He moved in recent years to an apartment on Oakland Avenue and could frequently be seen riding his bicycle in downtown Indiana.

Shane's wife, Esther, was with him and suffered unspecified injuries.  She is back home in Indiana.  Funeral arrangements for Bill Shane have not been announced.
