Kittanning man was to have hearing yesterday

The 41-year-old Kittanning man facing charges for his alleged sexual involvement with a 15-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital Tuesday night, forcing the postponement of a preliminary hearing on new criminal charges.

Gregory Shaffer, who was originally charged in April with stashing the girl in Indiana County at an apartment in the former Shelocta Hotel, was hospitalized with an undisclosed medical condition.  Just hours before, Judge Ken Valasek had ordered that Shaffer be released on his own recognizance tomorrow for admission and pre-op at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.  After hospitalization, he is to be released to house arrest with orders not to have contact with any females under age 18.

Shaffer was to appear yesterday before District Judge James Owen after being charged with sending hundreds of texts to the girl, some of them sexually explicit, after his April arrest.  He also faces new charges including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault and corruption of minors for numerous sexual encounters with the girl at the Holiday Inn Express outside of Kittanning in early April.

His hearing has been continued to September.
