Ten legislators to lead anti-poverty effort in Harrisburg

Representative Dave Reed has announced a team of lawmakers who will lead the push for legislative action on issues raised by his House Majority Policy Committee poverty initiative.

Ten Republicans will carry Reed’s “Empowering Opportunities: Gateways Out of Poverty” initiative forward:

  • Representatives Bryan Cutler and George Dunbar will examine Outcomes That Matter, an effort to evaluate the effectiveness of current anti-poverty programs.
  • Representatives Rosemary Brown and Dan Truitt will lead Life Skills 101, which will look at programs to teach life skills such as financial literacy and budgeting.
  • Representatives Tom Murt and Tim Kreiger will explore Benefits That Work, an effort to lead people out of dependency on government assistance programs and into situations that offer brighter prospects.
  • Representatives Becky Corbin and Tommy Sankey will look at The Essentials, programs that ensure the poverty-stricken will have essential needs met, such as food, water, shelter, and clothing.
  • Representatives Todd Stephens and Jim Christiana will study Educating Through Opportunity, to evaluate all aspects of education in the state and determine whether those in poverty are acquiring the skills needed to succeed.

Reed says there are 1.6 million Pennsylvanians trying to escape the grip of poverty, and he hopes his initiative can develop policies and legislation to help them.
