Union strike votes scheduled for November 12-14

With the possibility of a strike now part of the discussion, negotiators for the State System of Higher Education and APSCUF, the faculty union at the state-owned universities, resume bargaining tomorrow in Harrisburg,  Their last session was October 22nd, and it did not end well, with the union formally rejecting the latest contract offer.

Both sides say there is agreement on the compensation aspect of a new deal, but sticking points remaining to be worked out include health care for current and retired faculty, temporary faculty workload and compensation, and distance education course development compensation.

Union delegates voted last month to begin the strike authorization process, and faculty members at each university are scheduled to vote November 12th, 13th, and 14th to enable their leadership to call a strike.  APSCUF members have been working under terms of their last contract, which expired on June 30th, 2011.  The new contract would be a four-year agreement, retroactive to that time, which would mean that this year is already the second year of an agreement which has yet to happen.
