The annual dinner meeting for the Open Door was held last night at the Chestnut Ridge in Blairsville.  Open Door officials are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and much of the discussion at last night’s meeting revolved around the organization’s history and how they worked hard to keep the doors open in the early years.

The keynote speaker was Frank Jans, who is the director of psychiatry at Allegheny General Hospital.  Jans was involved in the Open Door from 1977-1991.  Plenty of awards were handed out.  Five-year service awards went to Leslie Martin and Lori Pollock.  A 20-year service award went to Jamie Sgro and a 30-year service award was given to Beverly Wissinger, who Executive Director Vince Mercuri called the “Spirit of the Open Door” before announcing that the annual Spirit award would be named the “Beverly Wissinger Spirit Award.”  This year’s winner is Renda Broadcasting Account Executive David Neely.

One other award was presented last night.  The Bernie Smith Community Service Award went to Dr. Ralph May from the Community Guidance Center.
