We’re just a few days away from the start of buck season here in Indiana County.  If you shoot a deer and can’t use the venison, there is a program here in Pennsylvania to assist you.  It’s called “Hunters Sharing the Harvest.”  The program is conducted by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

Through the federal Emergency Food Assistance Program, Hunters Sharing the Harvest works with meat processing companies all over the state.  Hunters can donate their deer to the meat processing companies, who in turn process the meat and turn it over to local food pantries.

In Indiana County, Cunningham Meats participates in the program and owner Scott Cunningham says they’ve been one of the program’s biggest participants.

To learn more about the program or to obtain a full list of participating meat processors, visit www.sharedeer.org, or call 866-474-2141.
