Motion for grade realignment allows for possibility of closing one elementary

At last night’s Indiana Area School Board meeting the board engaged in extensive discussion, mainly on two topics: AP classes and a study that is to include the possibility of closing an elementary school building and realigning grades.

Board Member Diana Paccapaniccia put forth two motions that directs the administration to develop plans to close either Horace Mann or Eisenhower elementary schools. Her main point, she said, was to give information to the new board that will be seated a year from now. Since this is a long process, she did not want to delay gathering the information any longer.

Other board members were hesitant to agree to such a motion. The administration has already done studies on grade realignments and has updated the numbers within the past year. One aspect of the studies has involved the possibility of moving the fifth grade to the junior high. Superintendent Dale Kirsch said in his opinion, it would be difficult to close a building and keep fifth grade at the elementary level.

The motion was amended to allow for the realignment study to include the possibility of closing a building, keeping the discussion on the table for the coming year. The motion passed 7-1

AP classes also came into discussion. A motion was put forth to keep the removal of AP classes off the table for the 2013-2014 school year. The motion was voted down, partly based on arguments that it ties the hands of the board on the issue.

The board also reorganized ina separate session, re-electing Tom Harley as president and Walter Schroth as vice president.
