Jury selection starts today in the murder trial of a man that police say was the ringleader of a group of roommates in Greensburg that are charged with the torture and killing of a mentally ill woman.

Prosecutors say that 26-year-old Ricky Smyrnes was orchestrated two days of torture and the death of 30-year-old Jennifer Daugherty back in February of 2010.  Daugherty was found dead, wrapped in Christmas lights and garland in a plastic garbage bin in the Greensburg Salem Middle School Parking lot.  Smyrnes’ trial will be the third regarding the killing of Daugherty.  Melvin Knight was convicted and sentenced to death in August for his role in the killing.

Angela Marinucci, Smyrnes’ girlfiend, was convicted of first-degree murder in 2011 and sentenced to life in prison, since she was 17-years-old at the time of the killing.  Smyrnes’ defense team is expected to claim that mental illness played a role in the killing.  They’re also expected to contend that Smyrnes has a low IQ, around 75, compared to the average in the United States of 100.  Testimony in the trial is expected to begin on February 4th.
