The Blairsville/Saltsburg School Board met last night after having another safety meeting earlier in the evening.

School districts across the country are continuing to reevaluate their safety procedures. Assistant Superintendent Ian Magness talked about the safety meeting that took place last night.

Magness said that already the district has tightened up security in areas such as during after school hours, where he said maybe the district was getting a little lax, and in front office admittance of outside guests.

During the ARIN Intermediate Unit’s meeting last night there was discussion of incident management practices. One of the highlights was organizing students at schools to be dispersed to other regional schools to attend class if an incident occurred and the buildings had to be shut down for an extended period of time.

Board President Ed Smith talked about a situation where parents recently boarded a charter bus with a basketball team and rode with them to the game. Smith and Superintendent Dr. Tammy Whitfield were very clear that this is strictly not allowed, due in part to liability. Smith said it was the responsibility of coaches to enforce this policy.

Dual enrollment classes at colleges can now be counted towards graduation requirements. The district also came together with dual enrollment agreements with Penn Highlands and La Roche.
