Norhern Cambria man to be sentenced next month


The Northern Cambria man who caused the deaths of an Indiana County couple in a crash in 2010 pleaded guilty yesterday to homicide by vehicle, homicide by vehicle while under the influence, and aggravated assault by vehicle while under the influence.


42-year-old Michael Sherwood could serve five to twelve years in prison for causing the deaths of 76-year-old Richard Davis and 69-year-old Lois Davis of Alverda.  Sherwood was on his way home from a methadone treatment clinic in Richland on September 3rd, 2010 when his swerving pickup truck veered into the opposite lane on Route 271 on the Nicktown Hill, smashing head-on into the Davis’ car.  Lois Davis died instantly and Richard Davis passed away two weeks later at Conemaugh Memorial in Johnstown. 


The Davis’ passenger, Orlanda Veltre of Alverda, was injured in the crash,  He testified yesterday before Judge Norman Krumenacker.  Also testifying were the Davis’ daughters, Mary and Kimberly, who gave the judge their consent to the plea bargain arrangement.


Sherwood, who suffered a broken neck in the accident, will be sentenced on March 5th.
