Faculty union to vote next month

With the faculty vote coming next month for the tentative contract between the State System of Higher Edcuation and APSCUF, more details of the deal are coming to light.  We’re beginning to see how some of the higher profile issues were resolved.

One of those issues is the early retirement offer.  The deal requires that if a positon held by a retiring faculty member is filled, it must be by a full-time tenure-track replacement.  Eligible faculty who accept the offer and have 15 to 20 years of service will get 20 percent of their base pay, minimum $10,000 and maximum $20,000.  Those with more than twenty years on the job get 30 percent of base salary, with a minimum of $14,000 and maximum of $30,000.

Another aspect of the deal that we’re learning more about is retrenchment policy, which covers faculty layoffs.  The basis for layoffs will be limited to changes in finances, program changes, elimination of courses, or elimination of duties outside the classroom by a faculty member whose primary responsibilities are not in the classroom.  Retrenched faculty members will have preferential treatment for vacancies at other universities and will retain their tenure at their new university.
