Chronic Wasting Disease Found In Our Region

The Game Commission will hold a news conference today on the confirmation of chronic wasting disease in our region.  The Game Commission said Friday that three deer tested positive for the neurological disease that is fatal to deer, elk and moose.

The deer were killed in Blair and Bedford counties during hunting season last fall.  They represent the first wild deer to test positive since the state started monitoring for the illness in 1998.

Up until now, chronic wasting disease had only shown up in captive deer in Pennsylvania.  The first case was found at an Adams County farm in October.  The disease can be spread among animals through bodily fluids but there is no evidence that it can be transferred to humans.
