90-YEAR-OLD MAN PUNCHES TROOPER, THREATENS TO SHOOT
East Wheatfield Township man jailed

3/19/2013

A 90-year-old East Wheatfield Township man was placed in the Indiana County Jail over the weekend and is facing a charge of aggravated assault on a state trooper.

Police went to the home of Russell Stiffler, alongDonelson Road, last Friday afternoon after they received a call to check on the welfare of an elderly woman who lived there.  Stiffler had said prior to the police arriving that he would shoot any state trooper orEMSpersonnel who showed up at his place.  He met the troopers outside on his porch and refused their orders to show his hands, come off the porch, or to get down on the ground.  When they approached, Stiffler punched one of the troopers, but they subdued him and took him into custody.  No one was injured.

Stiffler is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, and harassment.  He was jailed after being unable to post $25,000 bond.  He has a hearing scheduled next Monday before District Judge Susanne Steffee.
