Suspect accused of hiding girl at Shelocta apartment

A Kittanning man has a preliminary hearing scheduled Wednesday in Armstrong County Court on charges that he harbored a teenage girl at an apartment in Indiana County after she ran away from home last week.

41-year-old Gregory Alan Shaffer, who has been involved in at least two dozen criminal cases in Armstrong County alone since 2000, is accused of picking up the 15-year-old girl outside of the Bethel Township Municipal Building and, driven by another man, taking her to the former Shelocta Motel, which is now operated as an apartment house.

Shaffer twice told police he didn’t know where the girl was, but an acquaintance told state troopers that Shaffer had another residence in Indiana County and he had told her the week before that he was considering kidnapping the girl.  The next day, the man who had driven the pair to Shelocta told police about the apartment and when they knocked on the door, Shaffer answered and the girl was there also.

Shaffer is being held on $20,000 bond.  He’s charged with concealing the whereabouts of a child, interference with the custody of a child, and corruption of minors.
