Document to be presented to University Senate and Council of Trustees

President Michael Driscoll has reviewed the results IUP’s October 28th Strategic Visioning Summit and has come to some conclusions, which will be presented to the University Senate and the Council of Trustees next month.

The summit featured breakout groups addressing a wide variety of topics.  Among the highlights for Driscoll were the need to define goals for IUP’s students and to define “success” for alumni; the importance of IUP’s connection to Indiana and western Pennsylvania, coupled with a need to connect with the broader world beyond the region; the need to streamline some of the university processes, with the key example being the curriculum process; and better promotion of the positive things IUP does in the community.

One interesting aspect of the summit was  a discussion of opinions on the desired student body of IUP.  Some pointed out that the university must not abandon students who are underprepared, while others suggested an enhanced focus on well-prepared students.

Driscoll will present a final version of the vision statement, a marked-up version that shows the substantive changes from the first draft, and the verbatim notes taken at the breakout sessions.  He will ask for the endorsement of the statement by the University Senate at its meeting on December 3rd and by the Council of Trustees when it meets December 5th.
