Payson gets 20 years

A Blairsville man was sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court to 240 months in prison, followed by lifetime supervised release, on his conviction for sexually exploiting children by producing sexually explicit images.

46-year-old Charles Joseph PaysonIIIof East Campbell Street, Blairsville, was indicted last April after the case was transferred from the Indiana County District Attorney’s office to the office of U.S. Attorney David Hickton’s Western District of Pennsylvania.

Investigators found that Payson produced images of a minor engaged in sexually explicit behavior in August of 2010, storing the images in computer, camera, and cellphone files, and then distributed them to various recipients through the next two years using an unwitting neighbor’s wireless internet connection.  The District Attorney’s online crime investigator Robert Erdely traced the images to Payson’s computer in November of 2012.

Cases such as Payson’s are typically transferred to federal authorities because of the wide distribution capabilities of the internet.
