John Melvin O'Keefe, age 78, of Indiana, passed away Friday, April 18, at his home surrounded by his family. Friends of John Melvin O'Keefe will be received on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home in Indiana. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church in Indiana. Interment will be in the St. Bernard Cemetery.

John Melvin O'Keefe, age 78, of Indiana, passed away Friday, April 18, at his home surrounded by his family.

 

He was born in 1935 in Pittsburgh to Joseph F. and Evelyn Rose Martin O'Keefe.

 

Melvin was a member of the St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church and the Knights of Cloumbus 4th Degree.

 

He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club where he served as president, lieutenant governor, chairman of Kiwanis Bingo for 20 years, awarded the George E. Hixson Fellowship Award and the Kiwanis Bingo Leadership Award.

 

He was also a member of the Army Reserves from 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1961.

 

He served as White Township tax collector for 24 years and was employed as manager for Penn Furniture for 20 years. Melvin was also president of the Indiana Company Tax Collectors Association for many years.

 

Melvin was a loving husband, father and proud grandfather.

 

Melvin is survived by the following:

His wife of 58 years, Mary Louise Simpson O'Keefer, of Indiana

Three children:  Patricia R. Johns and husband, Robert, of Charleston, W.V.; James M. and wife, Renee, of State College, Pa.; and Thomas J. and wife, Kristi, of Camp Hill, Pa.

Seven grandchildren:  Joseph, Nicole, Amanada, Maggie, Miles, Lauren and Travis

Two brothers:  Robert J. and wife, Nora, of Pittsburgh; Dennis E. and wife, Marjorie, of Pittsburgh

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, by two brothers, Walter R. and Joseph F. O'Keefe.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church in Indiana. Interment will be in the St. Bernard Cemetery.
