Alex Semuskie, 91 of Iselin, PA passed on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Indiana Regional Medical Center.

He was the son of Michael and Anna (Duda) Semuskie, born on March 18, 1921 in Iselin, PA.

Alex was a life long resident of Iselin where he graduated from elementary school.  He worked for the CCC then returned to Iselin to work in the mines for R & P Coal Co. for 18 years with his brother Stanley.

In 1942 he joined the United States Navy for over 4 years serving during WWII.  He served in Europe, North Africa on the USS Delta and in the Pacific on the USS Briscoe as a Boatswains Mate 1st Class.

1948 he married the late Edith (Clemens) Semuskie.  1958 began as maintenance supervisor for Elders Ridge High School retiring from that position in 1982.

In the late 40’s and thru the mid 50’s he was a stand-out baseball player in the Indiana County leagues playing for Coal Run and Iselin teams.  This quote from the Indiana Evening Gazette sums up his love for baseball and his versatility as a player.  “Who is responsible for this robust exhibition of powerhouse baseball.  Not one man by any means!  Iselin has several great acquisitions to their 1949 personnel including Alex Semuskie, the handy one who did everything but umpire the games at Coal Run in the R & P circuit last year.”

Alex Semuskie, known as “Latch” to his many friends, never stopped working after retirement.  He always had time to help a neighbor, a friend and his 5 sons.  He welcomed all to his home and delighted in visiting people sharing his zest for life.

He lived his life to the “enth” degree as long as he could work by day, play ball by late afternoon and dance (polka) through the night with Edith. They were so smooth – they twirled around the dance floor like a wedding cake top – round and round, they never tired!

Up until late fall Alex loved going to Avonmore to take a “Spin”.  There was always a pretty girl to catch his eye for a polka lesson (Slovenian style).

Desmond Tutu once said “We are only the light bulbs in life and our job is just to remain screwed in”.  “Alex “– “Dad” – “Pap”, you were our light in life showing us the way.

He is survived by five sons, Stanley and wife Gretchen from Patton, PA; Alex and friend Kim from Smithton, PA; Timothy and wife Debbie from Iselin, PA; Gregory and wife Wendy from Damascus, MD; Michael and wife Nancy from Gettysburg, PA; he was a very proud grandfather of 11, Steven, Alexis, TJ, Alise, Andrew, Elliot, Sam, Kathryn, Stanley, Matthew and Felicia; two great-grandchildren, Riley and Rachael; one sister, Nellie (Semuskie) Knopick from Punxsutawney, PA.

Alex was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Edith (Clemens) Semuskie; three sisters, Mary, Kathrine, and Jenny; two brothers, Stanley and Tony.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. Wedneday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home, Indiana.  His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the Church of Good Shepherd, Kent, PA., with Fr. Timothy Kruthaupt as celebrant.  Interment will follow in Iselin Union Cemetery.
