Wanda Petty Rife, 88, of Indiana, passed away Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at St. Andrew’s Village, Indiana.
She was born in Columbus, Ohio, Apr. 7, 1925, a daughter of the late John Tecumseh and Rose Ann Pennings Petty.
Graduating from high school in January 1943, she was employed by the Curtiss-Wright Aircraft Corporation in Columbus, assembling SB2C Helldivers for the Navy. After World War II, she graduated from The Ohio State University, and earned her Master’s degree in Library Science from the Western Reserve University in Cleveland. She returned to Ohio State to a position at the William Oxley Thompson Library, where she had worked as a student. She was employed as a librarian there until 1958 when she married, and the couple moved to Indiana. In 1960, she took a position at the Rhodes Stable Library at Indiana University of Pennsylvania until her retirement in 1990, completing 45 years of library work at Ohio State and IUP.
She is survived by her husband, Merle Rife, of Indiana; a daughter, Roseann Pennings Rife, of Hong Kong; a sister-in-law, Judy Petty, of Pittsburgh; a son, John Albert Rife, and grandchildren, Cameron Rife and Nikolas Jay Rife, all of Salineville, Ohio; a grandson, Ryan Stoakes, of Kent, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John David Petty.
At the request of Mrs. Rife, funeral arrangements will be private. Robinson-Lytle, Inc., Indiana, is in charge of arrangements.
