The Pirates officially traded closer Joel Hanrahan to the Boston Red Sox yesterday in a six-player deal.  The Bucs get first baseman-outfielder Jerry Sands, pitchers Mark Melancon and Stolmy Pimentel, and infielder Ivan De Jesus Jr. in exchange for Hanrahan and infielder Brock Holt.

The trade of Holt, who was seen as insurance at second base should Neil Walker’s back problem crop up again, is seen as a signal that Walker is healthy.  The second baseman says he foresees no limitations once spring training begins.

The Pirates also designated pitcher Chad Beck for assignment.  He had been claimed off waivers from Toronto last fall and will be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis if no other team claims him.
