De'Antwan Williams ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns to help IUP to a 42-14 win over Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West football action on Saturday afternoon.
The win was the second in a row for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the PSAC West. Clarion fell to 4-5 and 2-4.
IUP raced out to a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter, getting a touchdown runs of four and 20 yards by Williams. The Crimson Hawks scored on drive of 14 and nine plays, going 81 and 73 yards, respectively.
Clarion got back in the game at the beginning of the second quarter, putting together an eight-play, 70-yard drive that ended with an 11-yard rush by Travis Day to make the score 14-7.
Two Clarion offensive drives later, Carl Fleming recovered a fumble in Golden Eagles territory which led to a 30-yard touchdown toss from Mike Box to Terrill Barnes (Gettysburg/Gettysburg) on IUP's very first play to help give the Crimson Hawks a 21-7 lead.
The Golden Eagles were driving on their very next possession late in the second quarter but a Bobby Thomas halfback pass was intercepted by Marco Pecora and returned 45 yards for a touchdown as IUP went into the break with a 28-7 lead.
Pat Brewer returned the second half opening kickoff 51 yards to the Clarion 42, setting up IUP's next score. Williams ran three times for 28 yards on the drive as Box capped the drive with a touchdown run from one-yard out to help put the Crimson
Hawks on top 35-7.
IUP got its final score at the beginning of the fourth quarter, when backup quarterback Steve Franco found Drew Carswell for a 21-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-and-18 play.
Clarion added a late touchdown, as quarterback Darelle Carson found Jon Reid for a 35-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter.
IUP outgained the Golden Eagles 402-298 on the day, including 277 yards on the ground alone.
Izzy Green carried 14 times for a season-high 86 yards and Erik Finklea added 57 yards on his 14 carries. Box finished 7-of-12 for 79 yards and a touchdown through the air. Franco was 1-of-3 for the 21-yard score while Logan Weaver also saw time under center, going 2-of-3 for 25 yards, adding a 13-yard rush.
Williams also caught three passes for 26 yards while Barnes had two catches for 32 yards and a score. Carswell had two receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Fleming finished with 10 total tackles, including seven solo, with a fumble recovery. Terrell Holloway had seven tackles and a pass breakup while Dorian Lane had six stops, including two-for-loss, and a sack. In addition to Pecora's interception, Eric Williams had his fifth pick of the season.
The Crimson Hawks return home next week as they host Gannon on Senior Day at Frank Cignetti Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
