Penelec says scammers are targeting their customers, and the utility warns its customers against falling for the ruse. The caller tells Penelec customers that because they are behind on their bills, they must pay immediately over the phone or their electricity will be shut off. The scammer is also using “spoofing software” so they appear to be legitimate on caller ID.
Penelec only sends disconnection notices in writing and will not ever demand payment immediately. Anyone with questions may call Penelec at 1-800-545-7741.
