An anonymous person has helped the Salvation Army in Indiana County in a big way just by dropping a gold coin into their red kettle.
The coin was found in the red kettle at the Walmart in Indiana, and was appraised to be worth $1400. The coin found in Indiana County was one of two found in the region, with another $1400 gold coin found in a kettle in Zelienople.
The red kettle campaign is currently in its final two days, and kettles will be out at the Indiana and Blairsville Walmart locations, along with 4th Street BiLo and Giant Eagle. The Salvation Army was as of last week before the gold coin was appraised at 50% of their goal for the year of $75,000. One of the big reasons for the dip in donations was due to the Christmas shopping season being shortened due to Thanksgiving falling late in November.
Salvation Army Captain Denise Martin said that those who are tech-savvy can make donations using their cell phone.
The annual red kettle campaign will end tomorrow at 4:00 PM.
