Yesterday, we reported a positive COVID-19 case at East Pike Elementary School around 10:30 a.m., and it was brought to our attention that around 12:30 p.m., another case was reported at East Pike. This case is said to not be related to the aforementioned case.
The news of the first positive COVID-19 case led to the dismissal of students Friday morning, and a closure of the elementary school is scheduled until after the Thanksgiving break. Other area elementary schools and Indiana Junior and Senior High Schools will remain open. Superintendent Michael Vuckovich said in a press release that the district hopes to reopen the school to students on Tuesday, December 1st , but in the mean-time students were given instruction guides for the switch to online learning.
Vuckovich said the district was later notified that a third party employee at the junior and senior high schools had tested positive for COVID-19. He said that according to the information the district received, the employee had no close contact or exposure to any staff members and, as of now, only one student will need to quarantine.
Vuckovich said in the release that he recommends that the junior and senior high schools remain open, however closures could come across the district if the number of positive cases continues to rise, and the district continues to monitor this situation closely.
