The Steelers were practicing in shorts and helmets again yesterday, but coach Mike Tomlin ran them through a pretty intense workout, including the two-minute drill, with which he was always pleased.
Linebacker TJ Watt has yet to practice with the team in training camp and there is no timetable to return. Tomlin said only that he is not required by the league to provide injury updates and he will not now for Watt or anyone else who is a non-participant, such as Stephon Tuitt.
Cornerback Joe Haden was given the day off to rest and tight end Eric Ebron missed practice with a sore elbow. Offensive line starters Zach Banner, Chuks Okorafor, and Kevin Dotson continued to be sidelined, and linebacker Devin Bush did not practice with his teammates either.
Running back Jaylen Samuels limped off the practice field late in the session and tight end Dax Raymond was hurt during the two-minute drill at the end of the day.
Tomlin was asked specifically about the wide receivers’ many dropped passes last season, but he expanded the question to include all of last season, saying he isn’t looking back.
The competition for the punter’s job between veteran Jordan Berry and rookie Pressly Harvin III has been spirited. Tomlin says Harvin, who won the Ray Guy Award as the nation’s top college punter last season, can boom it.
The Steelers will practice under the lights with fans in attendance tonight at Heinz Field.
