After the commonwealth approved the state budget for the new fiscal year on Friday, leaders of the State System of Higher Education spoke out on the historic increase in public education spending.
The budget allocated approximately $552.5 million into the State System for the new fiscal year, marking an increase of $75 million from last year. Additionally, $125 million in one-time American Rescue Plan Act funds was given to support the State System Redesign that sees six state-owned universities merged into two sectors.
Chancellor Dan Greenstein said that the budget was good for both PASSHE and the commonwealth.
The increase is the largest PASSHE has received and it allows tuition to hold steady for the fourth consecutive year, despite inflation.
