Accolades continue to roll in for PITT running back Izzy Abanikanda as he was named the ACC Running Back of the Week for his role in the team’s 45-29 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday.
Abanikanda tied two school records after piling up 320 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 36 carries. This all coming against a Top-25 ranked rushing defense. He currently leads all FBS rushers with 12 touchdowns and ranks second in rushing yards with 830, falling just behind Illinois’ Chase Brown, who has 879 rushing yards.
After more stat digging, it was discovered that Abanikanda also joined LaDanian Tomlinson and Ricky Williams as the only players in current Power 5 programs to rush for 300+ yards and six touchdowns in a game over the last 25 seasons.
Offensive lineman Marcus Minor was also named ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week for the first time in his career. University officials say Minor “was the spearhead up front” for three of Abanikanda’s biggest runs. He also gave up zero quarterback pressures and zero sacks.
PITT is off this week and returns to action on October 22nd against Louisville.
