Students from IUP and members of the public gathered at the Indiana Mall Thursday night to celebrate the grand opening of a STEAMshop geared towards bringing their ideas to life.
Continuing the tradition of “Common Goods” pop-up stores, several students in a 100-level 3-D design course, taught by professors Shannon Massey and Shawn Derry, created models from brown craft paper with the theme of “things we need but cannot buy.” Some models represented kindness, health, and identity.
With a concept as unique as this, Derry explained how students came up with ideas and brought them to life.
Massey said this store was a great way for the community to engage with students, especially underclassmen.
Madeline Sensor, a freshman Art Education major, brought the concept of “Hope” to life by creating Mexican lanterns, or luminarias.
She broke down how the two are tied together.
Sensor adds that she would recommend this course to all students, even those who have little to no experience in STEAM.
An official 3-D course will be offered at IUP in the Fall 2023 semester.
The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, and again from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Products can be purchased with a $25 donation, or $10 donation for students.
Proceeds benefit the Future Makers Fund.
