Representative Jim Struzzi says the Federal Communications Commission’s new National Broadband Map enables website visitors to learn about the availability of broadband service in specific areas, but an important feature of the map is that individual users can submit potential inaccuracies through January 13th. And there do appear to be inaccuracies.
For instance, in Indiana County the map shows only one small area, between Glen Campbell and Rochester Mills, having less than 100 percent coverage with both fixed and mobile broadband. That’s despite widespread work done by county and state officials that has identified many areas without either fixed or mobile broadband.
Pennsylvania has a newly developed Broadband Development Authority seeking to invest federal aid to deploy broadband services where they are needed most. Struzzi says the number of Pennsylvanians without access to broadband is estimated to be as high as 800,000.
