While he sits on Pennsylvania’s Death Row, Kevin Murphy quietly continues to pursue an appeal of his conviction and sentencing for the murders of his mother, sister, and aunt at the family’s glass business outside of Saltsburg in 2009.
Now 62 years old, Murphy was convicted in 2013 of three counts of murder in the first degree. He lost a Supreme Court appeal in 2016 and then claimed inadequate legal defense by his original attorneys, and in 2019 a new team of attorneys was appointed. Now after several years of delays and court-approved motions for extensions of time to prepare his new appeal, Murphy’s attorneys last week were granted a petition for funds to pay for archival footage from WTAE-TV. Documents on the motion have been sealed by Westmoreland County Judge Meghan Bilik-DeFazio, so it’s unknown what they hope to learn from the footage.
Murphy’s latest motion for an extension of time was approved on February 23rd. There is no published date for the next court action.
