The Road to Hershey makes its final stop tonight at the GIANT Center and the remaining two Indiana County girls’ basketball teams look to make history.
Until Monday night, the Indiana girls’ basketball program was the only team from Indiana County to reach the PIAA state championship, making it in both 1983 and 2010 but falling in both games. The Homer-Center Wildcats and River Valley Panthers have a chance to make history as both will be playing in their respective championship games.
The 24-7 Wildcats have dominated the 2A bracket, picking up commanding wins over Chartiers Houston in round one, Millersburg in round two, Sacred Heart Academy in the quarterfinal round and, most recently, a 47-13 drubbing of Montrose in the semifinal round Monday night, but they face one final hurdle on their path to gold as they battle District 10 champion Kennedy Catholic.
The Golden Eagles downed Greensburg Central Catholic, 56-44, in Monday’s semifinal, and tonight marks the second time they face a team from District 6 in the state playoffs. They faced third-seed Bishop McCort in the quarterfinals and beat the Crushers, 62-48.
The game will mark the final time that seniors Molly Kosmack, Macy Sardone, and Anna Cutshall take the court together. Kosmack said this is a great way to end her tenure as a Wildcat.
Sardone said making it to the GIANT Center has been a goal all season long for the Wildcats and they’re ready to compete.
You can hear the game on WCCS 101.1 FM, AM 1160, and WCCSradio.com starting at 11 a.m. with the pregame show. Tip-off will follow around noon.
The 29-2 River Valley Panthers are coming off a come-from-behind win over Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Monday’s semifinals, a game in which they trailed heading into the midpoint of the fourth quarter. Now, they set their sights on District 2 champion Dunmore in the Triple-A championship. The 21-3 Lady Bucks are fresh off a 43-37 win over Lancaster Catholic in the semifinal round and have not lost a game since January 28th.
Panthers coach Ricc Brown says his team is ready for the Bucks.
Brown also said the community support has energized his team.
Ava Persichetti said the championship run has been fun, but her team knows they still have work to do.
Tonight’s game between River Valley and Dunmore tips off at 6 p.m. We’re on the air on Cat Country 106.3 FM and catcountry1063fm.com at 5 p.m.
