New information regarding the Penelec outages has been added to the story (2:35 p.m.)
Parts of Indiana County are experiencing a power outage this afternoon.
Penelec reports that 1,636 customers are without power at this moment. Of that total, 1,620 live in White Township, while just a handful of residents are without power in Armstrong and Center Townships, along with Indiana Borough.
REA Energy is also reporting outages in White and Center Townships. According to its outage map, 1,450 of its cooperative members are without power. 1,095 of them living in White Township.
REA officials said the cause of the outage stems from their power supplier as there was a disconnection at the substation. Penelec officials say a piece of underground wire near Wilson and North Street was the source of the outage in White Township. No cause has been determined, but they add approximately two-thirds of customers had their power restored 1:50 and 2:30 p.m.
Both companies estimate power will be restored between 4:30 and 5 p.m.
