Former Indiana Borough Mayor George E. Hood has died, reported in a social media post by the Indiana Borough Police Department late Sunday afternoon.
Hood served Indiana Borough as mayor for 23 years, beginning in 1997 until he stepped down in 2020 from health issues that forced him to move out of the borough. Along with his duties as Mayor, he also organized troop sendoffs and receptions, and was a part of the borough’s bicentennial events in 2016. In November of 2021, the Indiana Borough Building was re-dedicated as the George E. Hood Municipal building.
Current police Chief Justin Schawl remembered Hood as a strong supporter of the police department and the borough staff, and said what he felt encapsulated Hood the best was the meaning behind his middle initial.
Hood lived in the borough for 87 years, which was something former Chief William Sutton remembered. He said that Hood was also a person who represented the borough well.
Indiana Borough Council President Peter Broad remembered Hood as someone who took pride in his work and his family.
Broad led the charge in re-dedicating the Municipal Building in honor of Hood. He said that stemmed from his dedication to Indiana Borough.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced yet.
