A portion of the PA Turnpike will close for construction over the weekend, and that will mean that motorists will be taken on a detour that will include parts of Indiana and Westmoreland Counties.
The eastbound lanes of an 86-mile stretch of turnpike between New Stanton and Breezewood will be closed Saturday night at 11:00 PM as crews work on two repair assignments. One of them is the removal of a damaged trailer from a truck that crashed in a construction zone in Somerset County on January 11th. The trailer had been stored behind some construction barriers since the accident. The other assignment is the repair of both travel lanes at mile marker 130 in Bedford County, which was damaged in a separate incident. The road is expected to reopen at 6 AM Sunday.
Eastbound traffic will be affected by this. Drivers are advised to avoid the area during the closure or take a 100-mile detour. The suggested detour from the Turnpike Commission starts as people exit the New Stanton interchange and follow Route 119-Turnpike Route 66 for two-tenths of a mile, then take Turnpike 66 North for 14.2 miles, then Route 22 East for 63.7 miles, then follow I-99 south for 30.4 miles, then Route 30 east for 18.3 miles, then re-enter the turnpike at the Breezewood interchange.
Westbound traffic will not be affected by these closures.
