WPIAL BASEBALL
Indiana made a long road trip to play a Quad-A playoff game against powerful Blackhawk and came up with a win over the second seeded Cougars. Here’s Jake Slebodnick.
Indiana coach Bill Thompson says his players were confident they could win against the team that eliminated them last season.
Thompson says Indiana won’t be bothered by another long bus ride to Seneca Valley (for a second consecutive day).
Indiana will play Hopewell back at Seneca Valley this afternoon at 4 o’clock. The airtime on WDAD will be 3:45. Indiana is the 7th overall seed in Quad-A and has now beaten Laurel Highlands and Blackhawk in the playoffs. Hopewell came into the playoffs as the 14th seed. They’ve beaten number three West Mifflin and yesterday they eliminated 6th seeded North Catholic, 6-2. The other half of the bracket will have number one Montour against number five Greater Latrobe.
DISTRICT 6 SOFTBALL
The first round of the District 6 Double-A softball playoffs began yesterday with four Heritage Conference teams involved, and the conference also had one team in the Class A draw. After yesterday, only one Heritage Conference team is left standing. That’s number four Marion Center, which took care of Heritage rival Cambria Heights, 12-2. The Stingers had ten hits, including two by Lydia Miller, who had a double and cracked a grand slam home run. Cheyenne Silvis hit a two-run homer and also had a single. Mya Lipsie had two hits and Alexis Roush, Abigail Smulik, Kayla Hill, and Kailey Anderson all added a hit. Silvis earned the win and struck out four.
Marion Center moves on to the second round where they will take on top seed Bald Eagle Area, a 10-0 winner over Homer-Center.
Heritage Conference champion West Shamokin hosted Southern Huntingdon, and the Rockets came up with the victory, topping the Wolves, 5-3.
In Class A, Portage fell to West Branch, 4-1.
