The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has put the entire state of Pennsylvania under a Code Red Air Quality Action Alert.
Yesterday, the county was not under any alert status, but Westmoreland and Armstrong Counties were part of a group of 20 counties in the state under a Code Orange alert. Under a code red level, Air quality conditions are considered unhealthy for all people, and more severe side effects can be seen in vulnerable populations, including the very young, the elderly and those with lung or heart ailments.
Accuweather Meteorologist John Gresiak said that the wildfires in Canada have produced a thick cloud of smoke that is expected to make its way to our area today.
The DEP advises people to reduce outdoor exercise or strenuous activity, while those in the vulnerable category should avoid any strenuous outdoor activities.
