UPDATE: Firefighters were called back to the scene for a rekindle at about 5:00 AM. they were on the scene for about two hours.
REPORTED EARLIER:
Three fire departments worked quickly to contain a structure fire early this morning at 243 South 14th Street, between Washington and Church Streets.
The fire was reported at 12:36 AM at a three-story house used as an apartment building. Indiana County 911 dispatcher Mike Mulgrew had just gotten off his shift. He lives in the area and he smelled smoke and spotted flames coming from the building and called it in, then alerted the first floor residents and they got out of the building. The second and third floors were unoccupied.
Indiana Fire Association’s Ron Moreau says the fire was in the attic and Clymer and Homer City firefighters were dispatched as well. The fire crews were able to isolate the flames to the attic and roof, with some water damage to the first and second floors. The situation was under control within a half-hour. No official cause has been established yet, but it may have been electrical in nature. Moreau thanks Citizens Ambulance and Indiana Borough Police for their assistance at the scene.
Other than that structure fire, it’s been a relatively quiet weekend for emergency responders. Pine Township and Cherryhill Township responded to a trash fire yesterday afternoon along Route 422 in Pine Township. Armagh/East Wheatfield and Citizens Ambulance were dispatched for an accident on Wehrum Road in East Wheatfield Township last evening.
