Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry is warning residents of another scam making its way through the state. This time it involves those in the market for rental properties.
Henry said in a statement that scammers are placing fake ads and altering existing, legitimate ads in order to obtain personal information, security deposits, and rent payments. The way scammers do this is by changing the contact information on an ad or by hacking the actual realtor’s email account. Some scammers even place ads for properties not currently on the market.
All residents are urged to lookout for these scams, however Henry urges college students planning to live at school in the fall to heed these warnings. She adds “if a landlord refuses to meet in-person and show the property, that is usually a strong indicator of a scam.”
