The Penguins got their California sweep last night, but it took overtime and an extraordinary play to make it happen. Paul Steigerwald has the story.
Bryan Rust’s game-winner was his seventh goal of the season. He says the Penguins weren’t sharp, but they were able to do the job.
The Penguins’ other scores were by Sidney Crosby on a wraparound, a short-handed goal by Lars Eller off his own steal, and Jake Guentzel, who chipped in a beautiful cross-ice feed from Crosby.
Coach Mike Sullivan appreciates Sidney Crosby’s leadership.
Crosby likes the momentum the Penguins have built with three straight wins in California, especially since they didn’t play their best game last night.
Goaltender Tristan Jarry will be listed as day-to-day while the Penguins wait for the swelling to go down and his vision to clear up after he took a hard hit to the head Tuesday night in Anaheim. Jarry’s helmet was knocked off in a collision and a puck then struck him in the right eyebrow area. The Pens recalled goaltender Joel Blomqvist from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Magnus Hellberg made 33 saves in goal last night.
To fit Blomqvist in under the salary cap, the Penguins sent forward Vinny Hinostroza to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and put defenseman John Ludvig on long-term injured reserve with a concussion. Jeff Carter returned to the Penguins’ lineup to replace Hinostroza
Forward Andreas Johnsson cleared waivers and his contract was officially terminated yesterday freeing him up to sign a four-year contract with a team in his native Sweden.
The Penguins will be back at PPG Paints Arena tomorrow night against the Buffalo Sabres.
