BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Homer-Center topped Claysburg-Kimmel, 55-51, in the Ferndale Tournament. The Wildcats jumped out to a 30-21 halftime lead, but the Bulldogs closed the gap to two in the third after outscoring Homer-Center 16-9 in the frame. But the Wildcats went 7-for-10 from the free throw line in the fourth, while holding Claysburg-Kimmel to a 1-for-6 mark to walk away winners.
Angelo Alexander led the Wildcats with 17 points and a 70 percent mark from the charity stripe. Owen Saiani added eight while Marcus Coy and Braden Dunn had seven.
Conemaugh Township’s John Updyke notched his 1,000th career point in the Indians’ 70-40 win over Northern Garrett at the Berlin Tournament.
Penns Manor beat Purchase Line, 51-45, in the Purchase Line Lions Tournament.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Blacklick Valley edged Purchase Line, 67-58. Four Red Dragons notched double figures. Bella Cessna led the team with 14 points. Katie Weaver, Anna Layden and Jianna Hopkins each had 10. Blacklick Valley’s Kristin Szymusiak led all scorers with 31 points.
Portage advanced to the Stevens Carpet One Holiday Hardwood Classic Championship game with a 63-40 win over Everett.
WRESTLING
Several area wrestlers shined at the Southmoreland Holiday Classic.
United’s Jacob Sombronski, Josef Garshnick, Gideon Bracken, and Caden McCully all advanced to the semifinals with wins. Colton Henning, Michael Monty, Gaige Grassmyer, Aiden Gallaher, Dylan Stephens, Zack Travis, and Sawyer McGinnis will wrestle in the consolation bracket. United finished the day in second with 96 points.
River Valley’s Kaden Barnhart and Chase Stuchal also advanced to the semifinals, while Chris Clawson, Jack Rummel, and Michael Wano battle in the consolation bracket.
