Marion Center gave it their all but a late surge by Kennedy Catholic sealed their fate in a 42-40 loss in the PIAA Girls 2A Championship game Thursday afternoon at the GIANT Center in Hershey.
The Stingers trailed by three after the first two quarters of play but outscored the Golden Eagles 15-8 in the third, even taking their first lead of the game at the 6:29 mark after junior Mollie Shadle hit a three-pointer on the left wing.
Kennedy Catholic was resilient and powered through the fourth quarter, re-claiming the lead with five seconds to go after a put-back shot by junior Layke Fields. The Stingers attempted another comeback, but an errant inbound pass allowed Kennedy Catholic to come out winners.
Fields led all scorers with 29 points and a 67 percent mark from the floor.
Senior Lydia Miller led Marion Center with 18 points while Shadle added 11. Senior Mya Lipsie added 7 rebounds.
The Stingers finish a prolific 2023-24 season 24-6 overall, 11-3 in the Heritage Conference and a District 6 2A Championship.
