Nioma Elizabeth (Steetle) Johnston, 94, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2024, at her home. Born September 20, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Charles R. and Elizabeth P. (Lydic) Steetle and was the loving wife of the late William S. Johnston whom she married on November 22, 1952. Together they shared nearly 64 years of marriage.
She graduated from Indiana High School and worked as an operator for Bell Telephone before starting her family.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Family was everything to her. She was happiest when surrounded by her children and grandchildren taking pride in the accomplishments of each and every one of them. In later years Nioma cherished the peaceful time spent on her deck surrounded by the flowers and birds which she so loved. She was a woman of strong faith calling upon it to help her through increasingly challenging times.
She is remembered by her children Michele J. Johnston, Indiana; Patrice J. Johnston, Homer City; John J. (Debra) Johnston, Home; Lisa J. O’Hara, Howard; and Jeffrey J. (Romona) Johnston, Capon Bridge, WV. Nioma will be missed by her grandchildren Jennifer Visnesky, Joshua William Overdorff, Krista Johnston, and Kayla Johnston, and her great grandchildren Lauren Visnesky and Jordan Morrison. She will also be missed by her surviving siblings Regina Tate, North Tonawanda, NY, and C. Robert Steetle, Utica, PA.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son William, an infant granddaughter Jillian, and several brothers and sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana Fire Association, 501 Philadelphia Street, Indiana, PA 15701.
Per Nioma’s wishes, service arrangements are private and have been entrusted to the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home & Crematory of Indiana. Interment will be held at Oakland Cemetery.
