The Indiana County Chapter of the NAACP will hold its annual Juneteenth Celebration today at Mack Park.
The free event will be held at the park’s pavilion from 3-8 tonight and will have a theme of “Generation Next: Helping Children, Youth and Young Adults Fly.” Free swimming for all ages will be held at Mack Park Pool, and there will be several other activities at the pavilion, including a memorial bench dedication in memory of Patty Holmes, who died in January. Holmes was a longtime officer with the Indiana County NAACP and a member of the executive committee. She is also remembered as a performer with the band Grist for the Mill, who will also perform at the Juneteenth celebration today.
The guest speaker at the event today will be Debra Mason, who is a diversity and inclusion official with Seton Hill University and the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh.
Dr. Carolyn Princes with the Indiana County NAACP said that with Juneteenth becoming a national holiday a few years ago, celebrations are becoming more common across the nation.
While the event is free, registration is required. Registrations can be made here.
