Even with the continued dry, hot weather, the state Department of Environmental Protection still has not placed any counties under drought watches or warnings, but there are plenty of indications that people should limit their water use. The U.S. Geological Services drought map shows almost all Pennsylvania counties along the southern border as being most at risk of drought. Indiana County’s indicator shows some areas of concern.
U.S. Drought Monitor, a service of the National Drought Mitigation Center, the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, places Indiana County is the “Abnormally Dry” category, but almost all of neighboring Westmoreland County is in “Moderate Drought” status.
Blairsville Borough and the Indiana County Municipal Services Authority are among those who have asked for voluntary conservation of water from their customers.
