GIRLS BASKETBALL
Penns Manor routed Homer-Center in a Heritage Conference matchup last night. The Comets sprinted away from the Wildcats, leading 19-1 after one quarter and 34-5 at halftime, on the way to a 51-17 victory. Alyssa Altemus had an outstanding night with 24 points, a night after she scored 24 against West Branch. Katie Bertolino added 10 points and Summer Fennell scored 9 on three three-pointers. Homer-Center couldn’t overcome Penns Manor’s aggressive defense, committing 15 first-half turnovers. Almost the entire second half was played in the Mercy Rule. Penns Manor is 4-1 while HC fell to 0-4.
Alivia Ruddock had 15 points and 9 rebounds and Macie Miller scored 10, with 5 steals as Marion Center topped West Shamokin, 43-20.
JUNIOR HIGH
River Valley’s 8th grade and 7th grade girls teams split a doubleheader against Purchase Line. In the 8th grade game, the Red Dragons prevailed, 46-10. Giada Colinet had 6 and Madisyn Dirienzo the other 4 for River Valley. In the 7th grade game, River Valley won, 24-12. Emily Kepple scored 9 points for the Panthers, Zoee Faith, 6, Sophia Schultz, 4, Addison McGinnis, 3, and Gianna Corridoni, 2.
HOCKEY
Jordan Rieke scored at 6:08 of the third period as Moon edged Indiana last night, 2-1 at the S&T Bank Arena. Brady Oakes scored his second goal of the season to tie the game at 1 in the first period, with an assist by Nick Tew, but the Indiana could not break through against Moon goaltender Chris Brown, who made 37 saves. Indiana’s defense was solid through two periods, giving up 24 shots, but Moon peppered Luke Rowe with 22 shots in the third period, with Rieke’s goal getting through for the game-winner.
It was Indiana’s fourth straight loss, evening their record at 5-5.
WRESTLING
United squeezed by Ligonier Valley, 41-36. Winners by fall for United were Noah Pisarcik, Sawyer McGinnis, Gideon Torres, Gideon Bracken, Colton Henning, and Connor Riffer. Josef Garshnick won his match by technical fall.
RIFLE
Indiana rifle lost to McGuffey, 783-41x to 793-43x. Top shooter for Indiana was Emelia Campisano with a 99-8x.
ON-AIR
We’ve got the Homer-Center boys hosting Penns Manor tonight on WCCS and it will be a special night, as the Wildcats’ 1989-90 team will be honored on the 35th anniversary season, when they went 25-6 and won the District 6 championship, advancing eventually to the PIAA Class A quarterfinals. That year’s seniors were part of a 74-13 overall record during their years on the team.
Mark Bertig talked to former Homer-Center coach George Sulkosky, who will be there tonight.
The Homer-Center Basketball Boosters hosted many of the former players last night at a dinner in the school cafeteria.
