An Indiana man was arrested yesterday after state troopers discovered that he was tracking his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle using an Apple AirTag.
State Police say 33-year-old Danish Ali faces a felony count criminal use of a communications device, a misdemeanor count of Stalking and a summary count of harassment. On January 29th, a 32-year-old woman arrived at the Troop A barracks in Indiana to report that her Apple iPhone alerted her an AirTag was trying to connect to her phone while she was driving. She and her father had searched the vehicle but could not find it. Troopers then searched the vehicle with her permission and found the device fixed to the rear passenger-side wheel well with duct tape. The following day, Troopers reinstalled the battery and the AirTag immediately tried to connect to a state police-issued iPhone, which then displayed a notification that showed the device’s serial number and the last four digits of the owner’s phone number.
Using the information, police determined that Ali was the owner of the AirTag. In an interview with police, Ali said that he put the device on her ex-girlfriend’s vehicle in an attempt to track her whereabouts two days prior, and did so without her knowledge.
Ali is now in Indiana County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for February 11th at 10:30 AM.
