The Philadelphia Eagles crushed the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl 59. The Chiefs were never really in the game as Philly dominated from the outset, scoring the first 34 points of the game, sacking Patrick Mahomes six times, intercepting him twice and forcing him to fumble once. One of those interceptions was a pick-six from rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean. The Super Bowl MVP was Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, who threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score as well.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, the former IUP wide receivers coach, says the win was a tribute to the sacrifices demanded of NFL champions.
Sirianni coached at IUP under Lou Tepper from 2006 to 2008. Ironically, he left IUP to become an assistant coach with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he spent four years before stops as an assistant with the Chargers and Colts before landing the Eagles job.
He says the Eagles set the stage for the win by practicing hard.
Other members of the Eagles with IUP ties include defensive quality control coach Tyler Scudder, who was IUP’s linebacker and cornerback coach from 2010 to 2012; and brandon hunt, the Eagles’ senior director of scouting. He was a guard and center for IUP from 2000 to 2003.
