In Bradenton, the Pirates’ Johan Oviedo threw his first bullpen session yesterday and manager Derek Shelton said the 6-5, 245-pound right-hander “looked strong.” Oviedo is returning this season from Tommy John surgery and the Pirates hope he can be in the mix for the fifth starter’s spot in the rotation.
Even though the full squad is not required to report until Monday, the team is pretty much already assembled, but according to DKPittsburghSports.com, it’s by no complete. Dejan Kovacevek writes that general manager Ben Cherington’s “main move” before the start of the season hasn’t been made yet, but multiple sources within the Pirates organization feel there will be an acquisition, probably through a trade, and probably involving a young Pirates pitcher.
