Andrew Heaney got off to a great start but it all fell apart for the Pirates after that as they were blown out by the Cubs last night. Joe Block has the recap.
Manager Derek Shelton says Heaney fell out of the groove after a solid start to the night.
Shelton says the Pirates need to get healthy, and to start playing better baseball.
Starter Andrew Heaney took the blame for the loss.
For the second game of the series tonight, Right-hander Carmen Mlodzinski [1-3, 6.95 ERA] gets the start for the Pirates against the Cubs’ lefty Matthew Boyd [2-2, 2.54 ERA]. It’s a 6;15 airtime, 6:40 first pitch on WCCS.
Reliever Dauri Moreta finally began an official rehab assignment with Bradenton in Low-A, pitching a scoreless inning yesterday, giving up a single but inducing a ground-ball double play. He had Tommy John surgery and missed all of last season. A rehab assignment for a pitcher can last thirty days, but for those recovering from Tommy John, teams can apply for three consecutive the-day extensions.
ALTOONA CURVE
Termarr Johnson got ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the first inning but his replacement, Mike Jarvis, went 3-for-4 to lead Altoona to a 10-2 win over Akron. Sammy Siani tripled twice and drove in three. Five Curve pitchers combined for fourteen strikeouts.
